Insurance Agent by Day. Rock Star by Night.

Meet Bruce Murray, Friendship Insurance agent in Dillsboro since 1998. Connecting with his customers is the highlight of his work.

"I like establishing long relationships with clients and becoming friends with them along with being their agent," Bruce shared. "I have many 19-year customers."

Those customers and friends often run into Bruce on the weekends, guitar in hand feeding his love of music. We caught up with Bruce and asked him a few questions about his love for music.

Q: When did your love for music begin?

A: My love for music began young, but I didn't start playing music (other than in the school band) until I was 15. My mom bought me a guitar and I've been playing ever since.

Q: How was your band, Bogus Hollow, formed?

A: Bogus Hollow was formed when the other guitar player, Kevin Smith, heard his niece Bobbie sing karaoke. He was impressed and told her she needed to be in a band. Kevin called me and Andre Hornsby, our percussionist/vocalist and within two weeks we were practicing. That was in July 2015.

Q: What style would you most identify with?

A: We don't really identify with any one style. We all have our preferred music style and we play them all...from old country to new rock.

Q: How was the name for the band selected?

A: Bogus Hollow is right behind Andre's house where we

practice. The location was named because it was the escape route for some crooks who were making "bogus" dimes in the early 1900s.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a musician? What are some of the challenges?

A: I enjoy playing out the most and singing harmony with my band-mates. When we play a lot of events, it can be easy to get burnt out. And it definitely requires a lot of energy to remain diligent in practice.

Q: Who are a few of your favorite artists and why?

A: Tony Rice is my all-time favorite musician. His guitar playing made me obsessed with the guitar. Merle Haggard is number two because of his voice, songwriting and guitar playing.

Q: Do you have a favorite song to perform?

A: Currently it is a mash-up song of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love and Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. I sing and take an extended guitar break. It is really fun to play.

Q: Any connections you see between your work as an insurance agent and as a musician?

A: You have to be able to deal with people, put your nervousness aside and go for it whether you are meeting with new clients or playing in front of a big crowd.

Bruce has found that both his job as an agent and playing music have given him the opportunity to make many friends for which he is thankful.
