One Dad's Life

October 24, 2017

Meet Greg Hughes, Lawrenceburg insurance agent. Greg has been part of the Friendship family since 2007 when he moved from Ohio back to his roots in Farmer's Retreat.

Greg and his wife recently welcomed another little addition to their family and he shares what it's like being a dad to a newborn and two teens.

Q:  Tell us a little bit about your family?

My wife Shannon and I have been married for almost 16 years.  We have a 14 year-old-son,Tanner, and a 12-year old daughter, Taci.  We were recently blessed with a new addition, a little boy Treyson.

Q:  What is the best part of having a newborn at home?

He is so much fun and is keeping us young. Sure, there are days that he wears us out, but the joy he brings is worth it.

It is exciting to think about doing all those things we miss doing with our two older ones all over again.

Right now, Treyson watches a lot of football with me and his big brother. He is a snuggler and that is probably my favorite part at the moment.

Q: What 3 tips  would you share with expecting parents?

First, I recommend having a couple of teenagers (or almost teens) at home already for the extra help! Just kidding, but they have both been awesome about being hands on and helping us.

My wife is awesome and does so much that she may be better to ask for advice. I try to jump in right away around my work schedule to help. I would encourage other dads-to-be to also make that a priority.  Personal time and hobbies just take a back seat.  Make parenting a joint venture.  You will love the hands on time with your newborn.

Our first two children were born while we were living in Xenia, OH. Our closest relative was an hour away.  It was a challenge at times to not have family as a resource.

Now, we have family members stop in to hold him for the 15 minutes before I get home from work and when Shannon needs to leave for work.  They watch him for a few minutes here or there when he is still asleep and Tanner or Taci need to be somewhere.

Don't be afraid to ask family and friends for help. Having those people near has blessed us this time around.

Q: What has been the biggest change  or challenge that you may not have been expecting?

The biggest challenge so far is simply that life goes on for everyone.  Shannon and I still have jobs. Tanner and Taci are active in several activities and it has been a little challenging to get everyone where they need to be while taking care of a newborn. That is where the nearby family has been a huge blessing.

Q: What should be taken into consideration regarding insurance at the arrival of a little one?

Insurance is probably the last thing on expecting parents' minds. Parents get pulled in many directions and have things their mind at all times before and after the arrival of a newborn.

Still, it is great time to take a moment and evaluate what you have as far as insurance goes.  It may be as simple as adding another contingent beneficiary to your current policy. It may mean taking out a little more coverage knowing that you could be leaving another loved one behind.

Life events tend to help us consider things we don’t always think about on a daily basis. Life insurance is one of those things.  Term policies can be very inexpensive and a way to make sure that there is some security there while still raising a young family.

If you have any questions about your current coverage or needs you can contact Greg or any of the Friendship Insurance team. We would love to help.
