Holiday Travel Delights and Disasters

November 14, 2017

Can you smell it? The teasing, wafting savory scent of roasting turkey, the sweet yeast rolls pulled from the oven or the oh-so-spicy pumpkin pie cooling to follow a delightful holiday meal.

Or maybe it is the salty-ocean air or earthy mountain pines you breathe in. Whether you are traveling to visit family or just getting away during the holidays, do you know if you are covered if something were to go wrong?

Tom Lewis, Friendship Insurance Agency Sales Manager, is a seasoned traveler.  He has enjoyed spectacular sunsets in Hawaii, circled the Statue of Liberty's twin in France and visited incredible sites in Russia, Germany, Aruba, Amsterdam and more. These trips went off without a hitch and with no issues. That was until his trip to the Bahamas with his wife Pam in 2015.

Tom and Pam were savoring the sites, culture and food when it took a turn. Pam woke up sick in the middle of the night and didn't get better. They found the best hospital available. She wasn't admitted until a $6000 security deposit was placed on their credit card. They did what was required, Pam was admitted and spent the next three days in the hospital before they could get her on a plane back home.

Returning home, they discovered she had a severe case of food poisoning and spent the next three months recovering. Thankfully she made a full recovery, but their credit card did not. Despite payment from their health insurance company for her medical expenses, Tom and Pam did not receive full reimbursement for their $6000 deposit.

Tom immediately recognized the value of travel insurance and that an affordable policy would have covered these unexpected expenses.

"I will never leave the United States without having it again," Tom shared.

He also now utilizes travel insurance when traveling within the United States as well. What are a few of the items travel insurance cover?

But is it affordable? Yes! Policies are based on the total cost of your trip and your age. Policies range from $20 - $350 on average. And while we hope you never have to file a claim, it is a small price to pay if something were to go wrong. Tom lost around $6000, but a friend of his lost much more when a travel experience required an emergency medical flight back home. The unexpected can be costly.

Tom and any Friendship Insurance Agent would love to share more information regarding how travelers insurance works and what you can expect. Stop in and see them or call 877-667-5101 before you leave for your next trip.
